Project brief

Context Architects is working with The Waitemata Table Tennis Association (WTTA) and Auckland Council to develop a new national Table Tennis stadium and regional function centre for West Auckland.
Located on the existing site of the Waitemata Table Tennis stadium, the new stadium will further invigorate the developing Parrs Park area. The existing stadium is dated, ridden with asbestos and has had little work done to it since it was built in 1974.
The new stadium will accommodate a growing membership, with enough courts to be able to hold national tournaments. It will include a function and event centre for local and community groups in Waitakere City.

The design concept for the stadium stemmed from the sport itself, with literal ‘bursts of energy’ coming out of what is a simple but elegant building form. The Northern face is punctuated with ‘bursts’ in pull-out facades that form part of the functions of the building itself.
The new stadium nestles into the park’s landscape and will be an icon for table tennis and the West. The design reflects the open and accessible community culture of the WTTA.
It is designed to capture bush views, with light and open plan non-playing areas, and an indoor/outdoor flow to be enjoyed year-round in the multi-use function areas.
The new stadium is an example of Waitakere’s eco-city ethos, with sustainability being a strong driver in the stadium’s design. It is oriented towards its Northern face and will recycle elements of the existing building such as using the old timber portals as seating. The stadium will also use rain water harvesting to collect water from the roof and reuse it in the building and for irrigation.
